Good health information
Good health information is an important prerequisite for good health. It should be easy to understand even without prior knowledge and should help you to better assess the advantages and disadvantages of health measures or treatments. This allows you to make decisions about your health in line with your personal goals and values.
Criteria for good health information
There are quality criteria for good health information. These criteria apply to written information, medical consultations, websites, videos, apps and audio formats such as radio or podcasts.
Pay attention to the following things:
- The information is written in simple and understandable language.
- The latest information from science and medical research (e.g. studies) is used.
- The date when the content was created is stated.
- Differences caused by age and gender are taken into account.
- The content is presented neutrally and realistically (no advertising).
- Information and recommendations are clearly separated.
- Uncertainties are mentioned.
- The benefits and risks or advantages and disadvantages of a health or medical measure (e.g. examinations, treatments) are presented in a balanced and comprehensible manner.
- Various treatment methods and alternatives are shown.
- Figures are clearly illustrated by graphics or comparisons. Risks are stated in absolute figures and there are meaningful reference values (e.g. 1 in 1,000).
- The author of the health information is indicated.
- The sources, i.e. where the information comes from, are visible.
Health information that completely meets all these criteria would be ideal, but is unfortunately the exception. Think about whether most of the points listed above are fulfilled or whether the questions that are particularly important to you are answered.
